How I Got Affiliates to Promote My Product

(My apologies for repeating some articles -- but maybe they are worth reading with renewed insight -- Gerard)

I could not build momentum. I was doing what I teach folks to do: get five sales on your first product, then you do another one next week and sell ten. You do another the next week and you sell fifteen, and that's a lot like how I started. In fact, that's how I started. But it wasn't working to try and break into this market.

Affiliates weren't promoting for me, and I had somebody tell me that affiliates don't promote until you have fifty or a hundred sales. So what am I going to do to get over this?

I needed a strategy to recruit affiliates in a big marketplace like the Warrior Forum, ClickBank, JVZoo, etc. I was using the Warrior Forum...

The light bulb went off. What about solo ads? Instead of sending my solo ads to an opt-in form, or instead of sending them to some "Thank-You" page, I can immediately get the subscriber if I send them to the WSO (Warrior Special Offer) page, and then I would just send them to whatever my current WSO was, and get fifteen, or twenty, or thirty sales, I found that was paying for my solo ads prices, not completely, but it was helping pay for it. Then with my back end it was paying for it.

This allows me to monetize my solo ad leads, and so I was just buying solo ads left and right, sending them to a WSO (it didn't even have to be my current one - it might be the top performing one). Send it to a WSO, get as many buyers as possible, put them into my twenty-one day conversion campaign, where people were spending like $18 - $20 within twenty days in the conversion campaign, by enrolling in coaching, prepaying some things, just various things that were in the integrated conversion campaign that I put together. It was really a phenomenal thing.

Now you're thinking "Why are you telling me all of this?" I want you to see the WHY behind it. Because, one of the things that happens in your business, you may find, is that you hit obstacles, and you just don't know what to do.

I hit an obstacle and solo ads weren't performing as well, so I decided I'd stop those. Then I saw the opportunity on the Warrior Forum and I put them together like I described above. Then I ran into another obstacle!

Solo ad providers stopped being willing to sell me ads that just went to the WSO forum because they weren't getting as many clicks. Then, if they don't get as many clicks, they don't make as much money. So, the bottom line was I had a harder and harder time finding ways to do that, but! but! by now, I had hundreds of WSO buyers, that I had gotten through these solo ads, now if I launched a WSO, I could send it out, send it only the buyers that had bought from me before, that way I would keep my conversion rate really high. And then people would buy, and I'd get my fifty, or a hundred sales, and then affiliates started noticing, and started promoting for me.

And, what would happen was most of the time you would get like ten affiliates, they'd each do like five sales, and honestly, it's pretty discouraging. Pretty discouraging, I remember how discouraging it was.

How am I ever going to scale? People are either sending out a test e-mail, or all these people had really small e-mail lists, and, I think there's a mix of both. But, then, the big break happened.

Some of those affiliates, when they bought my product, they would study it themselves, and then they realized that I had really good training, and then when they promoted it to their list, they would tell the people that it was really good training, they would want to promote for me, they would start promoting for me on the first day instead of waiting until there were fifty or a hundred sales. Why? Not because of anything special at the Warrior Forum, not because of any hot copy, I don't write hot copy, I write copy that gets the job done.

But people were choosing to promote for me because they liked me!

Because I offered phenomenal training. And I think that that's something that motivated me, and said this is something that is very, very, very interesting. And then what happened was you know a few affiliates that really could pull a hundred or two-hundred sales, they started promoting for me. And then they would even send me e-mails that would say, "hey, when you're going to launch something, let me know I'd like to promote for you." Sight unseen, why? Because of the quality of the product, and so what do I leave you with when I say this. Your product's got to be great. It's got to have high quality.

If you join the mailing lists of well-known marketers, (look on YouTube to make some choices) you will see what they have to offer. You can see their training style and try some products, also take note of how they market their goods, the sales pages, and emails or newsletters. This information will be useful for you in the future, collecting these is a useful thing to do and is known as a swipe file.

If someone makes a recommendation, see if their style, products and training suit you, However once you have chosen a mentor don't skip around follow their tried and tested plan without deviation, they know from experience what works, and can afford to test things. They may also have a forum or Facebook group that will allow you to communicate with other members which can be helpful when you are beginning.

In this series of articles, I will cover each of these in some detail, as I believe anyone can start to become an online entrepreneur, in as little as an hour or two a day.

Affiliate Marketing

When you become an affiliate marketer, you don't need your own product to make money online. By signing up at sites such as ClickBank or JVZoo, you can select from thousands of online products and begin to market suitable ones into your chosen niche.

A successful niche, or market, that can deliver profits is the first thing that an affiliate market needs to find. But there is no magic formula or a one-button solution. It is more complicated than that and takes some dedicated work, research and focus together with some good marketing practices.

I have found that there are a number of key steps, call them tactics, which have worked for me and continue to bring me success. Build these top three marketing tactics into your online business and you will see your opt-ins and sales increase.

To Succeed Online as an Affiliate Marketer You Need These 3 Tactics

1. Do not try to combine a number of affiliate products onto one website. Rather develop unique web pages to market each separate product you have decided to sell, as an affiliate. I use WordPress to develop these unique web pages, as it is easy to set up and manage. I will share some information on WordPress sites in a future article. So aim to create a separate web page for each affiliate product that you intend to market into your niche.

You should also try out each product that you plan to sell and provide your own product review on your website. In this way, the visitors to your site will have an understanding about what the product can do for them. Where you can, include testimonials from other online marketers who have already used the product. But first check with these customers that they are willing to allow you to use their feedback, name and photo on the site of the specific product you are marketing.

It also helps if you write articles that detail how the product can be used and add these articles as a separate page on the website. If the pages are attractive with images and compelling with good copy, they will increase interest in your product. Always include a "call to action" that can add the visitor's information to your list. A captivating headline and special points highlighted will help visitors quickly grasp the content and uses of the product.

2. Offer free reports to your readers. This will encourage them to send you the name and email address so they can receive your free report. Make this report relevant to the product you are selling. In a future article I will talk more about this and how to create autoresponder messages that will be mailed automatically to all those who opt-in for your free report. Research has shown that it takes more than one contact with a prospect to get them to buy your product, so keep building contact and a relationship with your opt-in prospects. A good example of this can be found in my bio below.

3. You want to attract the kind of traffic that is targeted to your product. If the person who comes to your website has a huge interest in what you are promoting, then there is a much better chance that they will ask for more information, than if they have no interest whatsoever in what you are offering. The latter will be among those who move on and never come back to your site.

You can write articles for publication in e-zines and e-reports - such as this article of mine. This way you can find publications that focus on your target customers and this will increase the likelihood that what you are offering might just grab their interest.

Just 2 articles per week, with at least 400-600 words in each article, can generate as many as 80 -100 targeted visitors to your site in a day.

Realise, however, that usually around 25 to 30 people out of 100 will grab a free report, whereas only 1 or 2 out of 100 people are likely to buy your product or ask for more information and then use your services. So persist and slowly build up the number of visitors through this article writing approach. If you can generate as much as 1,000 targeted hits for your website each day, that could result in you making 10 sales based on the average statistic.

These 3 tactics are not difficult to do, but will require a little time and an action plan on your part. As Nike says, "Just Do It."

The advantage of promoting a well-known person in your niche is that they have already built trust with their audience, so not very much credibility will have to be built with your audience when you promote their products to them.

Choose Best-Selling Products Proven To Sell

Another approach is to find the best-selling products, that is products that are proven to sell. You can look for products on Amazon, in ClickBank and other affiliate marketplaces. Whilst in Amazon click on the Best Sellers tab to view the best-selling products in that category. On ClickBank filter your options to popularity and check the results that they give you.

Make sure that the products that you are choosing are all related to the niche that you are in. For instance if you are an expert in hiking and your website is all about hiking there would be not point in promoting the latest smartphone there. The people reading your blog would probably not be very interested. So choose products that your audience will be interested in. For hiking this might be a hiking guide, hiking boots and any other accessories that go along with hiking.

Use Social Media To Promote Your Website

Once your website is up and running with a blog and posts related to your niche it is time to tell people about your website.

If you have a Facebook page then you can update your timeline with posts every time you write a new blog post inviting people to come to your blog to read your new post. You can do exactly the same if you have a YouTube channel, once you have uploaded a video share it on your Facebook page for others to see. You can use a paid option here which is called Boost Post, this will promote your post all over Facebook and you only pay when someone clicks on the link.

Mix your posts with content and tips with the occasional promotion. Do not send users from Facebook or YouTube straight to an affiliate sales page, this is often against the terms of service and you will face getting your page banned. It is a much better idea to send them to a page on your own website where you have written a review about the product that you are promoting with a link to the sales page on your page, not Facebook or YouTube.

Use SEO To Get Organic Traffic

Every post that you write on your blog should include keywords that people in your niche will type into Google when looking for information about your niche. This is called optimising your website for search engines, or search engine optimisation, SEO for short.

There are so many ways to do this that it is impossible to list them all here and out of the scope of this article, but you can go to Google AdWords and start a new campaign to check and see how many people are searching for a particular keyword in your niche.

If you choose a generic keyword that is being searched for thousands of times per month, for instance "how to lose weight", you will find that you are up against millions of pages using those keywords. It is much better to think about using longer keyword phrases that someone will type into Google, for instance "how to lose weight without dieting and counting calories." The total number of people searching for that keyword phrase will be lower but you will have a much better chance of your blog post being ranked higher in the search results, especially if you get a few back-links to that page, that is inbound links from high-ranking websites like Facebook, YouTube, EzineArticles and other high-ranking Blogs in your niche.

Don't make this difficult, just choose a phrase that you think people are searching for, you can check this by typing the search phrase into Google and see what results you are given. It's a judgement call, there is no rocket science here just look at the results you are given and see if you can make a better job with your information than what you see in the results. Get some back-links to this post and see where you have been ranked. This takes time, perhaps thirty to ninety days before you start seeing results from the search engines.

However, as with any business, there are things to look out for, which can trip you up in the affiliate marketing business, and which can cost you time and money. Hence it is better to know how to avoid the most common mistakes right from the start. These are my 3 Don'ts.

Mistake #1: Don't work with the wrong affiliate company or person

Like many others, you will most probably want to earn a return from affiliate marketing as quickly as possible. Many people therefore pick the product or affiliate company that seems to be the flavour of the month. In my view, you should rather choose to market products that you yourself would be willing to buy and use - this is an important step too, so you can give a personal review of the product. So choose your affiliate products carefully and try to choose a product in which you are truly interested.

For any business to succeed, spend some time to plan and figure out your ideal niche and strategy.

So, in summary: Pick a product that appeals to you. Do your research about that product to know the current demand for the product. With ClickBank, which offers thousands of affiliate products in many different niches, each product identifies the level of sales and the commission payable to the affiliate. Promote a product that you are truly passionate about, rather than one just based on the commission payable.

Mistake #2: Don't join too many affiliate programs.

I made this mistake when I started out and it turned out to be a nightmare. Because affiliate programs are so easy to join, it is tempting to join all that you come across, thinking you can earn more money this way.

Mistake #3: You don't buy the product yourself.

As I mentioned before, you should only market products that you are prepared to use yourself and which you feel are good products. You want to convince your prospects to buy the product, so a good review from you is a convincing way to start your promotion.

By buying and using the product yourself, you can decide if it delivers what it promises. You can then give a convincing review and testimonial of the product.

In summary: after researching your niche, pick a product you think will work and try it out. Then write a convincing review and promote to your lists.

Allow enough time to do things properly. Take the time to research your niche and your marketing strategy to ensure you are heading in the right direction. If done properly, you will be able to build a successful affiliate marketing program and enjoy a worthwhile income from your efforts.
