Eliminate Distractions
The important thing about working from home is to
make sure that you don't get overly distracted by all of the other stuff that
you could do. For some people, this means trying to set up an official work day
that they do even if this isn't strictly necessary given their work. For
others, it simply means making sure that nothing is going to get in the way of
you getting your work done.
This could mean making sure you work away from the
kitchen so you aren't always distracted by food, for example. It could mean
having a home office so that you don't get tempted to constantly talk to other
people in your home. It could mean having a working from home policy where you
close your home office door and no one can bother you at that point unless it's
an emergency.
This can really vary based on the person,
honestly. If you're a working from home mom, you may need to establish some
ground rules that keep your children from constantly pulling you away from
work. It's important to make sure that distractions don't eat up all of your
time or you will never get the amount of work done that you really need to get
done.
Match Your Work to Your Environment
Not all types of work at home jobs are going to
work for you in your specific situation. For example, if you're a work at home
mom, then you might be better off doing a working from home email type of job
or a writing job than you would be doing a job where you are required to talk
to people on the phone such as phone sales or phone support.
This is because if your child starts screaming or
suddenly desperately needs your attention while you're right in the dead middle
of a phone call, this is really going to be a major issue for your client,
customer, employer, or all three. It's distracting to you, it's distracting to
them, and it's highly unprofessional which could give them a dim view of you
overall.
Instead, you should look for jobs that work for
the environment you're in. In the example where you're a work at home mother,
you may need to find writing jobs or other sorts such as medical or legal
transcription where you can take a break from it if you're expecting
interruptions.
It's important to think about these issues before
you begin looking at working from home careers so you don't have any wasted
effort.
